Monsters in the Closet represents Mayday Parade’s fourth studio effort and a defining moment in their evolution from regional upstarts to leaders of the contemporary pop punk scene. After parting ways with a major label the previous year, the band re-signed with Fearless Records in January 2013 and immediately set about writing and recording new material. Sessions took place between January and June 2013 at a trio of studios including ZK Productions, Tree Sound, and The Castle Recording Studios under the guidance of producers Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount. Throughout the recording process, Derek Sanders’s emotive lead vocals and keyboard work were balanced by Alex Garcia’s incisive guitar riffs, Brooks Betts’s rhythmic support, Jeremy Lenzo’s melodic bass lines and backing vocals, and Jake Bundrick’s dynamic drumming and vocal contributions. The album’s twelve tracks range from the anthemic opener “Ghosts,” which confronts inner turmoil with soaring choruses and layered gang vocals, to the tender ballad “Last Night for a Table of Two,” and the expansive closing track “Angels,” which builds from sparse piano to full band climaxes. Song titles such as “The Torment of Existence Weighed Against the Horror of Nonbeing” hint at lyrical depth, while tracks like “Girls” and “Even Robots Need Blankets” showcase the band’s knack for balancing introspective storytelling with irresistible hooks

Upon its release on October 8, 2013, the album sold thirty thousand copies in its first week, earning Mayday Parade their highest chart debut to date at number ten on the Billboard 200. It also reached number four on the Alternative Albums chart, number two on Independent Albums, and number four on the Rock Albums listing in the United States, while the single “Ghosts” climbed to number thirty five on the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart and number sixteen on the UK Independent Singles Breakers chart. The band supported the album with a headline tour in the autumn of 2013 alongside Man Overboard, Cartel, and Stages & Stereos, and followed that with their Monsters Overseas European tour in early 2014. Critics praised the record’s polished yet emotive production, the band’s maturation in songwriting, and their ability to marry high-energy performance with reflective lyricism. A decade on, Monsters in the Closet endures as a fan favorite and a milestone that cemented Mayday Parade’s standing within the pop punk and alternative rock world, influencing a generation of bands who sought to blend heartfelt narratives with stadium-sized choruses
