Metallica – Load Remastered – 180 Gram Double Vinyl Record
Load is Metallica’s 1996 studio album, a broad and deliberately exploratory record that moved beyond the tightly defined thrash-metal structures of the band’s early catalog. Its songs draw on hard rock, blues, Southern texture, alternative rock, and extended groove while retaining the weight of James Hetfield’s rhythm guitar and the group’s large-scale dynamics. Coming five years after Metallica, the album presented a band willing to alter its sound, visual identity, and songwriting proportions rather than reproduce the formula of its most commercially successful release.
“Ain’t My Bitch” opens with a compact, confrontational riff, and “2 X 4” settles into a slower, heavier swing. “The House Jack Built” uses layered guitar and vocal effects to create an unsettled interior atmosphere, while “Until It Sleeps” compresses grief and illness into one of the album’s most focused singles. These opening tracks announce the record’s range: direct hard-rock impact can give way to unusual timbres, personal writing, and arrangements that build through repetition rather than speed.
“King Nothing” examines appetite and emptiness through a massive recurring groove. “Hero of the Day” offers a more melodic surface without abandoning tension, and “Bleeding Me” expands into a long struggle with damage, recovery, and responsibility. “Cure” brings the second side back toward a compact riff-driven form. Hetfield’s lyrics throughout Load are frequently inward-looking, replacing some of the earlier records’ social distance with images of dependency, family, self-deception, and the difficult effort required to change.
The third side moves through contrasting American rock colors. “Poor Twisted Me” leans into blues distortion, “Wasting My Hate” delivers a sharper attack, and “Mama Said” places Hetfield’s voice within a country-influenced arrangement shaped by loss and separation. “Thorn Within” returns to heavy introspection, framing guilt as something carried inside rather than imposed from outside. The diversity can be challenging by design, but it also makes Load a revealing document of four musicians testing how elastic the Metallica identity could become.
“Ronnie” uses a dark narrative and Southern-rock motion before “The Outlaw Torn” closes the album with an expansive search for connection and completion. The final song’s patient development makes it a natural endpoint, allowing guitar textures and vocal repetition to gather emotional weight over time. On this edition, the track appears in its extended form, restoring music that could not fit within the running-time limits of the original compact disc. That longer ending gives the album’s unresolved final statement additional space.
This 2025 Blackened Recordings reissue presents Load newly remastered on two 180-gram black vinyl records in a gatefold jacket and includes an MP3 download. The four-side layout gives the nearly eighty-minute album more physical room than a single LP, and the extended “The Outlaw Torn” appears on vinyl here as part of the complete program. The exact UPC identifies this standard remastered edition, released June 13, 2025, making it distinct from original pressings, colored variants, and expanded box-set configurations.
