New Mythology is Nick Mulvey’s third studio album and an ambitious attempt to join intimate songwriting with ecological and spiritual questions. Released in 2022, it was shaped by Mulvey’s experiences of family, climate anxiety, and the search for more responsible ways of living. The music remains rooted in his intricate guitar style, but the arrangements open into percussion, strings, electronics, and layered voices.
“A Prayer of My Own” establishes the album’s reflective tone, while “Star Nation” and “Mecca” turn repeating guitar figures into gently propulsive songs. Mulvey’s playing draws on folk traditions, West African rhythmic ideas, and the precision of a classical background, yet the songs avoid sounding like exercises in technique. The patterns support lyrics concerned with connection, responsibility, and wonder.
The middle of the album moves between the personal and the planetary. “Brother to You” speaks in direct human terms, “Shores of Mona” carries a quieter, pastoral mood, and “The Gift” leads into the expansive “Sea Inside (Third Way).” The production allows natural and electronic elements to coexist, reflecting the record’s interest in finding new relationships rather than retreating into nostalgia.
“Causes,” “Another Way to Be,” and “Mona” deepen the album’s questions without forcing easy answers. The brief “Interbeing Part 1” names a concept that runs through the whole project: individual lives are inseparable from larger systems. “Begin Again (Love You Just the Same)” then closes the vinyl program on a warmer, more forgiving note.
This vinyl edition uses the twelve-track LP sequence and does not add the acoustic “Star Nation” bonus found on some digital configurations. The exact program preserves the album’s intended arc from invocation through uncertainty to renewal.
