Wild Is the Wind reveals Nina Simone’s ability to make a collection drawn from several sessions feel like a single emotional world. Released by Philips in 1966, it crosses jazz, blues, folk, and art song through the force of Simone’s piano, her control of silence, and a voice that can move from tenderness to accusation within one phrase.
“Four Women” is the album’s uncompromising original, sketching four Black female lives while the arrangement tightens around each verse. “I Love Your Lovin’ Ways” and “Break Down and Let It All Out” carry stronger rhythmic motion, showing that Simone’s intensity did not depend on slow tempo.
The ballad performances are astonishingly exposed. “Lilac Wine” drifts between intoxication and grief, the title song stretches romantic longing toward obsession, and “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair” becomes a spare incantation. Simone’s classical command appears in dynamics and voicing, never as decoration.
“What More Can I Say,” “That’s All I Ask,” “Why Keep on Breaking My Heart,” “If I Should Lose You,” and “Either Way I Lose” complete a sequence about desire with no simple resolution. Each interpretation is shaped by a distinct pulse, making the album varied without losing cohesion.
This 2023 Verve Acoustic Sounds Series edition was mastered from the original analog tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and packaged in a tip-on gatefold jacket. UPC 602448556882 distinguishes it from the 2016 pressing also listed in this batch.
