Wild Is the Wind draws together Nina Simone recordings from 1964 and 1965 into an album of extraordinary emotional range. Released by Philips in 1966, it moves between blues, folk, jazz, and art song without treating those categories as boundaries. Simone’s piano and voice provide the through-line, turning a varied program into a coherent study of love, identity, and endurance.
“I Love Your Lovin’ Ways” opens with rhythmic assurance, but “Four Women” immediately shifts the stakes. Simone’s own composition introduces four Black women through sharply differentiated voices, using a spare arrangement and an escalating final verse to confront inherited stereotypes. Few songs make narrative, politics, and musical tension feel so inseparable.
The ballads are equally distinctive. “Lilac Wine” drifts with intoxicated uncertainty, while the title song stretches melody and silence until romantic devotion feels almost dangerous. Simone’s classical training is present in her command of dynamics and harmonic weight, yet the performances never sound formal or detached.
“Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair” and “If I Should Lose You” show her ability to transform familiar material through tempo and emphasis. Even songs drawn from separate sessions seem to answer one another, creating a sequence that moves between defiance, vulnerability, tenderness, and controlled fury.
This 2016 180-gram black vinyl reissue carries UPC 600753605738. It is separate from the 2023 Acoustic Sounds edition in this batch; both share the original eleven-song album, but their production, packaging, and barcodes are distinct.
