Description
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – Junk Culture: Demos and Rarities – Blue and Purple 180 Gram Double Vinyl Record
Junk Culture: Demos and Rarities explores the material surrounding OMD’s colorful 1984 album rather than repeating the familiar studio LP. It collects B-sides, long-form club versions, and working demos that show Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys refining a brighter, more rhythmic sound after the deliberately challenging Dazzle Ships.
The first side concentrates on songs that lived outside the album. “Her Body in My Soul” and “The Avenue” have the melodic confidence of lead tracks, while the re-recorded “Julia’s Song” reconnects the band’s mid-1980s production to its earlier repertoire. “Garden City” adds another less-traveled piece from the same creative period.
Across the middle sides, the 12-inch versions let the arrangements breathe. “Locomotion,” “Tesla Girls,” “Talking Loud and Clear,” and “Never Turn Away” gain longer introductions, instrumental passages, and rhythmic detail. These mixes make the set especially useful for listeners interested in OMD’s relationship with club culture and extended-format pop.
The final stretch becomes more archival. “The Angels Keep Turning” and compact rarities such as “10 to 1” lead into three Highland Studios demos. Those early versions expose the Fairlight textures, programmed rhythms, and melodic decisions before the material reached its polished album form.
Issued for Record Store Day 2024, this edition places all 15 selections on one blue and one purple 180-gram LP. The program was cut at half speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, giving the companion material a carefully prepared vinyl presentation distinct from the standard Junk Culture album.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
