Offramp is the 1982 album on which the Pat Metheny Group’s sound became fully panoramic. Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Steve Rodby, Dan Gottlieb, and Nana Vasconcelos combine guitar synthesizer, acoustic and electric keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, and voice into music that can feel weightless while remaining rhythmically precise.
“Barcarole” opens with a floating texture, then “Are You Going with Me?” builds one of the group’s defining long arcs. Mays’s repeating keyboard pattern creates a horizon for Metheny’s guitar-synth melody, which rises patiently rather than rushing toward a climax. Vasconcelos’s percussion and voice deepen the track’s Brazilian-inflected atmosphere.
“Au Lait” moves between gentle lyricism and denser ensemble color. On the second side, “Eighteen” and the title track introduce sharper edges; “Offramp” in particular uses guitar synthesizer less as an imitation instrument than as a source of unstable, expressive sound.
“James,” written for James Taylor, returns to a warm, songlike melody, and “The Bat Part II” closes in a more elusive mood. The sequence demonstrates the group’s range without sounding fragmented, held together by Metheny and Mays’s compositional partnership.
This 180-gram ECM vinyl reissue contains the original seven-track album. Offramp won the Grammy for Best Jazz Fusion Performance and remains a central entry in the group’s catalog.
