Pat Metheny Group – Travels – Double 180 Gram Vinyl Records
Travels is the Pat Metheny Group’s first live album, compiled from 1982 concerts following Offramp. Metheny, Lyle Mays, Steve Rodby, Dan Gottlieb, and Nana Vasconcelos perform with the polish of a studio ensemble and the scale of a touring band, stretching familiar compositions while introducing pieces that first appeared here.
“Are You Going with Me?” opens with a long, patient rise, its guitar-synth melody floating over Mays’s repeated harmony. “The Fields, the Sky,” “Goodbye,” and “Phase Dance” show the group’s range from pastoral lyricism to bright rhythmic release, with Vasconcelos adding percussion and voice as structural elements.
“Straight on Red” and “Farmer’s Trust” close the first record with contrasting movement: one propulsive and Brazilian-inflected, the other simple and deeply melodic. The live settings let Metheny and Mays expand transitions while Rodby and Gottlieb maintain the precise pulse essential to the group’s wide dynamics.
The second record contains “Extradition,” the sixteen-minute “Goin’ Ahead / As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls,” the title piece, “Song for Bilbao,” and “San Lorenzo.” It functions as both a tour document and a broad portrait of the group’s early repertoire.
This ECM reissue presents all eleven performances on two 180-gram vinyl records. The album won the Grammy for Best Jazz Fusion Performance and remains one of the clearest examples of the group’s concert power.
