Philip Boulding – Harp – Vinyl Record
Philip Boulding, a distinguished harpist and co-founder of the duo Magical Strings, released his solo album ‘Harp’ in 1988. This album showcases Boulding’s mastery of both wire and nylon-strung Celtic harps, as well as his proficiency with the whistle. The compositions blend traditional Celtic influences with original melodies, reflecting Boulding’s deep connection to the instrument and his desire to convey peace and solace through music.
This is the new release and the first solo effort from one-half of The Magical Strings duo. He is the harpist in the group, and on Harp he explores the various motifs of the celtic harp, which in this case were designed and hand-crafted by Boulding. This is far from a solo effort, as contributions from Billy Oskay of Nightnoise are everywhere evident, as producer, engineer and sideman on three cuts. Slight percussion and fretless bass also appear. The beautiful flow and rich sound are two very appealing elements of this work.
The album was produced and engineered by Billy Oskay, who also contributed violin, viola, piano, and harmonium to select tracks. Additional musicians include Jonathan Drechsler on fretless bass and Catón Lyles on hand percussion, enriching the album’s sonic palette.
A notable piece on the album is ‘Song for Reconciliation,’ inspired by a tragic event in Northern Ireland. Boulding composed this piece with the intention of bringing solace to troubled lives and inspiring peace worldwide. This sentiment underscores the album’s overarching theme of healing and tranquility through music.
