Description
Robert Glasper – Fuck Yo Feelings – Double Vinyl Record
Released on October 3, 2019, Fuck Yo Feelings is a mixtape by pianist, producer, and composer Robert Glasper, issued through Loma Vista Recordings. It marked Glasper’s first release of original music under his own name since the 2016 album ArtScience with the Robert Glasper Experiment. The title echoes a new tattoo Glasper acquired shortly before entering the studio, signaling the project’s loose, unapologetic ethos.
The sessions for Fuck Yo Feelings unfolded over just two days at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, Sound Inn Studio in Tokyo, and More Than Enough Studios, with Glasper inviting collaborators to drop in and record improvisationally. Production duties were handled by Glasper himself, alongside longtime associates Chris Dave, Derrick Hodge, and Curtis “Boogie” Jews. This spontaneous framework allowed for on-the-fly creation and a wide stylistic palette that moves fluidly between jazz, soul, and hip-hop textures.
Featuring an all-star lineup of guest artists, Fuck Yo Feelings showcases contributions from Herbie Hancock, Yasiin “Mos Def” Bey, Denzel Curry, Rapsody, Terrace Martin, Bilal, SiR, YBN Cordae, Yebba, Andra Day, Baby Rose, Queen Sheba, Mick Jenkins, Muhsinah, Staceyann Chin, James Poyser, and more. Tracks like “Gone” (feat. Bilal) and the title cut “Fuck Yo Feelings” (feat. Yebba) highlight Glasper’s ability to balance instrumental virtuosity with emotive vocal performances and incisive verses.
The mixtape received a mixed response. While some praised its generous spirit and the ambitious breadth of its collaborations, others—such as Pitchfork—felt that its 71-minute runtime sometimes lacked the cohesive momentum expected of effective mixtapes, calling certain passages “uninspired sonic backdrops” despite acknowledging the high caliber of Glasper’s guests. Nevertheless, the Recording Academy recognized Fuck Yo Feelings with a nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, underscoring Glasper’s continued impact on the intersection of jazz, R&B, and hip-hop
