Shinobu Sato, born in Japan, toured and concertized extensively in that country before emigrating to the United States in 1979. Since then, he has performed at festivals, coffeehouses, colleges, radio and television throughout the United States and Japan. He has consistently earned a reputation as a master craftsman of both nylon and steel-string guitar with an unequaled skill and originality, grace and wit. He draws his material from a hitherto unheard of variety of sources. He is also known for his brilliant arrangements, drawing upon his vast knowledge of counterpoint and harmony. Red Dragonfly contains Sato’s arrangements of J.S. Bach (“Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring’), Gershwin (“Prelude #2”), Scott Joplin (“Silver Swan”) and Turlough O’Carolan (“Si Bheag, Si Mhor” and “Planxty Irwin”), as well as traditional compositions for shamisen, gospel songs, even “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
