Soft Cell – The Art of Falling Apart – Double Vinyl Record

The Art of Falling Apart by Soft Cell, released in 1983, is a distinctive album that further explores the eclectic and experimental sound for which the synth-pop duo is known. Building on the success of their debut album ‘Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret,’ this sophomore effort demonstrates Soft Cell’s ability to push musical boundaries and delve into darker, more introspective themes.

The album’s title, The Art of Falling Apart, hints at its thematic content, which often explores issues of personal and emotional disintegration. The lyrics, delivered with Marc Almond’s characteristic intensity, touch on subjects such as love, relationships, and the challenges of modern urban life.

Musically, the album is marked by a blend of electronic synthesizers, drum machines, and Almond’s dramatic vocals. Tracks like ‘Where the Heart Is’ and ‘Numbers’ showcase Soft Cell’s ability to create a moody and atmospheric sonic landscape, combining catchy pop hooks with a more somber undertone.

The Art of Falling Apart is an album that showcases Soft Cell’s evolution and willingness to experiment with different styles. While it may not have achieved the same commercial success as their debut, it has earned recognition for its artistic depth and exploration of a more mature sound.

In the context of the early 1980s synth-pop scene, Soft Cell’s The Art of Falling Apart stands as a testament to the duo’s commitment to pushing artistic boundaries and creating music that goes beyond the conventional expectations of the genre. It remains a noteworthy chapter in the band’s discography and a piece of the broader narrative of electronic and alternative music in the ’80s.

Limited double vinyl LP pressing includes the original vinyl LP plus limited 12′ single that came with initial pressings. The Art Of Falling Apart is the second full length album by Soft Cell, reaching #5 on the UK charts. This reissue features the epic ‘Martin’ (based on the obscure George Romero psycho/vampires movie) on the bonus 12′ just like the original release. That very same 12′ single includes the controversial 10+ minute ‘Hendrix Medley’ that delighted fans but shocked those without a sense of humor who couldn’t comprehend why a synth-based band would record Jimi Hendrix songs. Blasphemy! The album includes the singles ‘Where the Heart Is’ and the double A-sided single ‘Numbers’ / ‘Barriers’.
