New Again is the fourth studio album by American rock band Taking Back Sunday, released on June 2, 2009, through Warner Bros. Records. It arrived three years after their Platinum-certified Louder Now—which had peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200—and introduced a refreshed lineup and sonic direction for the group. Clocking in at just over 38 minutes across 11 core tracks, New Again is anchored in alternative rock, pop rock, and post-hardcore, reflecting both the band’s established pop-punk roots and their willingness to experiment with new textures
Following the departure of guitarist Fred Mascherino in September 2007, Taking Back Sunday regrouped in early 2008 with Matthew Fazzi (formerly of Facing New York) handling guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals. Recording took place between September and November 2008 at multiple studios—including Avatar and See Squared in New York City, and NRG in North Hollywood—under the dual production of David Kahne (known for his work with Paul McCartney) and Matt Squire (Panic! at the Disco, All Time Low). The band aimed to capture the “power and scope” of their live performances while integrating fresh instrumentation and arrangements brought by Fazzi’s multi-instrumental contributions
New Again sees Taking Back Sunday embracing broader sonic palettes: alongside their signature, punchy guitar-driven anthems are unexpected layers of horns, glockenspiels, and even flutes, as well as three-part vocal harmonies that mark a departure from their earlier emo-tinged records. Adam Lazzara’s lyrics on this album are more forthright and introspective, while guitarist Eddie Reyes described the record as “one of the most aggressive [we’ve] ever written.” This melding of raw energy with polished production underscores the band’s intent to redefine their sound and push beyond genre conventions
Promotion for New Again kicked off in late 2008 with the streaming release of “Carpathia,” followed by “Sink into Me” as the lead single in May 2009. The title track was later issued as a free download ahead of the album’s June release. Taking Back Sunday supported the record with a rigorous touring schedule: they opened for Blink-182 on their North American tour in August–September 2009, co-headlined a U.S. run with The All-American Rejects in late 2009, and appeared at festivals such as Soundwave in Australia in early 2010. Despite this push, the album cycle proved turbulent, and by mid-2010 the band underwent another lineup change when Fazzi and keyboardist/backing vocalist Matthew Rubano departed
Commercially, New Again sold around 48,000 copies in its first week, debuting at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and reaching the Top 40 in both Canada and Australia. Its singles—particularly “Sink into Me”—charted on Billboard’s Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs lists, though overall public response was more muted compared to the band’s previous highs. Critically, the album received generally favorable reviews for its ambition and Lazzara’s vocal performance, yet in subsequent years the band themselves rarely revisited most of the New Again track list in live setlists, with only occasional performances of “Everything Must Go,” “Catholic Knees,” and “Lonely, Lonely” popping up as fan-requested deep cuts
