The Royal Court Of China – Geared and Primed – Vinyl Record
Taking their name from the highest possible grade of Chinese opium (and the original moniker of Jimmy Page’s Firm), the Royal Court of China balanced rootsy folk-rock and harder guitar rock before tensions about their ultimate direction eventually broke up the band.
The Royal Court of China consisted of vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Joe Blanton, lead guitarist Oscar Rice, bassist Robert Logue, and drummer Chris Mekow. After developing a strong local following around their hometown of Nashville, the group recorded the self-financed Off the Beat’n Path EP in 1986, which landed them a deal with AM. A self-titled album, supported by a tour with REO Speedwagon, appeared in 1987, but disagreements over whether their music should lean more toward folk or hard rock split up the band.
Logue and Rice formed the folky Shakers, who released an LP in 1988; meanwhile, Blanton and Mekow recruited bassist Drew Cornutt and guitarist Josh Weinberg, the latter of whom was immediately replaced by Jeff Mays. Geared and Primed did move the Royal Court of China into harder-edged territory while maintaining their diversity, but their songwriting had slipped, and the band called it quits after being dropped by AM.
Half the Truth released to radio and the video to MTV in January 1989. Geared & Primed released in February and supported by tours with Joan Jett and Cheap Trick. Half the Truth peaks at #76 on the radio airplay charts. The song, Geared & Primed, is released to radio as the bands second single in the summer and the band embarks on a West Coast tour.
The Royal Court of China relocates to Los Angeles and A&M releases the Lost Angels (Donald Sutherland, Adam Horovitz) soundtrack containing Love Long Gone, an out take from the G&P album. The Royal Court of China leave A&M at the end of the year.
