Various Artists – Frazetta – Picture Disc Vinyl Record

Frazetta is a Metal Blade Records compilation built around the visual world of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta and the heavy music his work has long inspired. The picture-disc format makes that connection literal, turning the record itself into a display piece while the program brings together ten artists from different generations of metal. Frazetta’s muscular figures, ruined landscapes and violent motion have influenced metal packaging for decades, particularly within traditional, doom and power-metal circles. The compilation acknowledges that shared visual vocabulary rather than attaching his name to an unrelated assortment of songs.

The first side begins with Armored Saint’s “Dropping Like Flies,” then moves through Lizzy Borden, Bitch, Cirith Ungol and Nasty Savage. These selections emphasize the theatrical, sword-and-sorcery edge of American heavy metal, with “Frost and Fire” serving as an especially natural match for Frazetta’s heroic imagery. Armored Saint and Lizzy Borden provide immediate Los Angeles metal history, while Bitch and Nasty Savage bring rougher theatrical energy. Cirith Ungol is the pivotal inclusion because the band’s fantasy-centered identity has always felt inseparable from painted heroic art.

The second side shifts toward newer and underground acts including Brimstone Coven, Mirror, Below, RAM and Twitching Tongues. Doom, traditional metal and heavier modern styles all appear, but the sequencing remains coherent because every track shares a sense of drama, weight or dark fantasy. The newer selections are not treated as filler. Brimstone Coven’s heavy psychedelic pull and Below’s epic doom sit naturally beside the sharp traditional metal of Mirror and RAM, showing that the visual tradition continues across different tempos and production eras.

Rather than presenting a conventional greatest-hits survey, the compilation works like a curated gallery. Familiar names establish the historical connection, while less obvious selections invite discovery. It is a compact way to hear how Frazetta’s aesthetic continued to resonate well beyond the era in which his most famous paintings first appeared. Twitching Tongues closes the set from a heavier contemporary angle, widening the compilation’s reach without breaking its mood. That choice makes the record a genuine cross-generational sampler instead of a collection limited to Metal Blade’s early catalog.

Released by Metal Blade in 2016, this edition is pressed as a full-color picture disc and contains the complete ten-track compilation. It is designed for metal listeners who also collect fantasy art, label anthologies and unusual vinyl editions, and it makes a striking display item even before the needle drops. The pressing comes in a generic clear sleeve so the artwork embedded in the disc remains visible. Its catalog number, 3984-25023-1, identifies the exact Metal Blade edition and helps separate it from unrelated Frazetta-themed releases or conventional jacketed compilations.
