Velma Frye is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with a strong background in classical and popular styles, and was flown from Florida to Minnesota eight times in the late 1980’s to be a guest and “the band” on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” Velma shared the stage with such notables as host Garrison Keillor, film director Sydney Pollack, humorist Roy Blount, Jr., musicians Leo Kottke, Doc Watson, Johnny Gimble, Greg Brown, Jean Redpath, the Nylons, Chanticleer, and Beausoleil. She returns to public radio as a frequent guest.
After releasing her 1988 recording “I Am To Someone” on Flying Fish Records, she married and had two children. Having devoted some years to her family, Velma is now performing concerts, teaching, and recording again. In 1996 Velma released “Bewitched” and “Music Spirit.” “Bewitched” offers eleven popular standards, mostly from the 1930’s and ’40’s, with voice, piano, violin, and saxophone. “Music Spirit” presents 23 songs, chants, and rounds, either a capella or accompanied by drum or guitar. After leading “singing circles” for a few years, the “Many Voiced Angel” CD came out in 2000, including many originals rounds and chants. Velma can also be heard on Pierce Pettis’ first album “Moments” and Loretta Armer’s 1995 yoga CD entitled “Namaste.”
