Vio-Lence – Eternal Nightmare – Deep Purple Marbled Vinyl Record

Vio-Lence’s 1988 debut Eternal Nightmare is one of the most distinctive records to emerge from the Bay Area thrash scene. It is fast and technically exacting, but its identity comes equally from Sean Killian’s wiry vocal phrasing and the way guitarists Phil Demmel and Robb Flynn pack abrupt turns into songs that still feel relentless. Producer John Cuniberti captured the band with a clear but abrasive sound, allowing rapid down-picked riffs and sudden stops to retain their edges. The mix does not exaggerate low-end weight at the expense of movement, which is essential to the album’s nervous momentum.

The title track opens with an extended build before the band breaks into full-speed attack. “Serial Killer” and “Phobophobia” follow with riffs that twist rather than simply repeat, and “Calling in the Coroner” turns grim subject matter into one of the album’s most memorable arrangements. The playing is disciplined, but never sterile. Killian’s voice is deliberately unconventional, stretching syllables across bar lines and creating a second rhythm against the guitars. Some listeners need time to adjust, but that tension is one reason the album remains instantly identifiable among many technically accomplished thrash debuts.

Side two keeps the pressure high through “T.D.S.,” “Bodies on Bodies” and “Kill on Command.” Perry Strickland’s drumming drives the stop-start structures, while bassist Deen Dell gives the lower end enough definition to keep the guitar maze readable. At seven songs, the album is concise but densely packed. Demmel and Flynn would go on to other major chapters in metal, yet their early partnership here is already complete. Leads, harmonies and tightly locked rhythm parts serve the songs, and the density never obscures the band’s ability to build anticipation.

The record remains essential because it sounds different from the better-known thrash albums surrounding it. Vio-Lence combines the velocity of the scene with nervous, almost unhinged vocal rhythms and unusually detailed guitar construction. The result is aggressive music that rewards repeated listening rather than relying on impact alone. The album arrived late enough in the first thrash wave to absorb the genre’s advances, but early enough to feel dangerous and unstandardized. Its combination of musicianship and personality explains why it is regularly cited as a cult classic rather than merely a period release.

Metal Blade’s 2022 edition uses the remastered audio and presses the album on limited deep-purple marbled vinyl. It includes a four-page booklet and download card, with the color limited to 1,000 copies worldwide. This is a strong collector’s edition of a foundational American thrash album. The remaster gives the recording renewed impact while preserving its original attack. The included booklet adds context to the physical package, and the deep-purple marbling provides a visually appropriate alternative to the other colors issued for Metal Blade’s anniversary campaign.
