Scott McCaughey – My Chartreuse Opinion – Cassette
Scott McCaughey is a musician and songwriter known for his work with bands like The Young Fresh Fellows, The Minus 5, and R.E.M. He has collaborated with various artists throughout his career and has released several albums.
During his tenure with the prolific Young Fresh Fellows, Scott McCaughey created this wonderful solo album. Joined here by some other Fellows members (but without Tad Hutchison, who contributed the hilarious liner notes), the core band is McCaughey and Smithereens drummer Dennis Diken. McCaughey’s songs utilize simple yet sophisticated hooks driven at full volume with breathtaking results.
There are some beautiful quiet moments as well, including the creepy, piano-centered ‘A Sobering Thought,’ and the acoustic guitar-accompanied ‘I Might Have Listened.’ The album originally closed with an exuberant cover of the girl-group era nugget ‘People Say,’ and is now appended with a couple songs accompanied by the Ben Vaughn Combo and another three songs with Jimmy Silva. As with all Young Fresh Fellows albums up to this point, MY CHARTREUSE OPINION is perfectly produced and recorded by Conrad Uno.
