The Jam – Sound Affects – 180 Gram Vinyl Record
Released on November 28, 1980, Sound Affects is the fifth studio album by The Jam, and it marked a significant artistic evolution for the band. While The Jam had already established themselves as one of the defining British mod-punk bands of the late 1970s, Sound Affects saw them moving beyond their earlier high-energy, Who-influenced power chords into more textured, experimental territory, incorporating elements of post-punk, funk, and psychedelic rock. Frontman Paul Weller described the album as being influenced by The Beatles’ Revolver, post-punk bands like Wire, and the soul grooves of Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall. The result is a record that retains The Jam’s sharp social commentary and melodic punch but with a more adventurous, sonically layered approach.
Sound Affects is tighter, moodier, and more dynamic than their previous albums. Tracks like “Pretty Green” and “Start!” lean into funk-inspired bass grooves, showcasing Bruce Foxton’s prominent, driving bass lines, while “That’s Entertainment”, the album’s most well-known song, is a stripped-down, acoustic-based track, offering a stark, poetic portrait of British working-class life. Meanwhile, songs like “Monday” and “Man in the Corner Shop” reflect Weller’s growing songwriting maturity, blending his trademark social realism with a more nuanced melodic sensibility. The album also features darker, more experimental moments, such as the tense, paranoid “Set the House Ablaze”, which echoes the intensity of Gang of Four, and the swirling, psychedelic-influenced “Scrape Away”, a track that hints at Weller’s future explorations in The Style Council.
Sound Affects was both a critical and commercial success, reaching No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, with “Start!” becoming the band’s second No. 1 single in the UK. The album was praised for its depth, variety, and willingness to push The Jam’s sound forward without losing their sharp, mod-punk energy. Today, it is often regarded as one of their finest works, a pivotal record that bridged the gap between punk, new wave, and the more sophisticated sounds of the 1980s. With its mix of socially charged lyricism, dynamic rhythms, and inventive arrangements, Sound Affects remains one of the most compelling and enduring albums of its era.
