Originally formed in Ohio, Mad River relocated to Berkeley, California, where they became part of the late ’60s psychedelic movement. While bands like Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead leaned into accessible, jam-friendly compositions, Mad River embraced a dissonant, edgy sound, often compared to early King Crimson, The Doors, and Country Joe & The Fish. Their music had an almost proto-prog feel, with intricate time signatures and haunting, jazz-influenced instrumental work.
