Inspired by the explosion of British psychedelia—particularly The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band—the album was shelved in favor of pursuing a more accessible pop-rock direction.
It wasn’t until Record Store Day 2021 that Regimental Sgt. Zippo was officially released on vinyl, with a broader CD/digital release shortly after.
The use of Mellotron, harpsichord, and orchestral textures channels the spirit of 1960s experimental rock. While Elton’s later sound would lean into glam and piano-driven ballads, this record shows him immersed in the avant-garde trends of the time.
