Jaden – ERYS – Double Pink Vinyl Records

Jaden’s ERYS, released on July 5, 2019, is an ambitious, genre-blending concept album that serves as the mirror image and darker counterpart to his 2017 debut SYRE. Where SYRE explored romanticism, vulnerability, and self-discovery through dreamlike production and lush melodies, ERYS flips the narrative with a louder, grittier, and more rebellious sound, centered around a character named “Erys”—a red-haired alter ego who embodies ego, chaos, and emotional detachment.

Built as a loose concept album, ERYS tells the story of this character’s rise and fall in a dystopian, fame-obsessed world. It draws sonic influence from trap, punk rap, industrial hip-hop, and alt-pop, with a heavy emphasis on distorted basslines, auto-tuned vocals, and abrasive energy. It’s chaotic by design, reflecting a character and world in disarray.

The album opens with “PINK,” setting the tone with aggressive production and rapid-fire flows. Songs like “NOIZE” (featuring Tyler, The Creator), “FIRE DEPT,” and “i-drip-or-is” channel raw intensity, with Jaden often shouting or delivering lyrics with a disaffected edge. These tracks feel like a deliberate response to critics who saw SYRE as too soft or overly aesthetic—ERYS wants to provoke, not soothe.

Despite its louder moments, ERYS includes more introspective, melodic passages too. “Summertime in Paris” (featuring Willow Smith) stands out as a serene, jazz-tinged duet that harks back to SYRE-era beauty. “K” and “Again” serve as emotional pivots, blending Jaden’s emo-rap vocalizations with production that hints at Kid Cudi, Kanye West, and even Travis Scott. The result is a body of work that constantly oscillates between bravado and vulnerability.

The album also features high-profile collaborations, including A$AP Rocky, Kid Cudi, and Lido, giving ERYS a genre-colliding feel that mirrors Jaden’s genre-fluid identity. He resists categorization at every turn, frequently shifting between rap, pop, punk, and experimental electronics—often in the same song.

ERYS received mixed to positive reviews. While some praised its ambition and fearlessness, others found it messy and unfocused. But even its critics acknowledged that Jaden was pushing boundaries—both in terms of sonic experimentation and narrative scope. Commercially, it debuted at #12 on the Billboard 200, reinforcing his status as a serious contender in the genre-bending Gen Z music space.

ERYS is not meant to be easy listening—it’s a conceptual fever dream, a dive into ego and identity wrapped in maximalist production and performative chaos. If SYRE was about beauty and longing, ERYS is about noise, disruption, and the cost of trying to be everything at once.
