Tantric – After We Go, released in 2004, is the second studio album from the Louisville-based post-grunge band Tantric, known for blending hard rock aggression with melodic sensibility. Following the success of their 2001 self-titled debut—which included hits like “Breakdown” and “Astounded”—After We Go saw the band attempting to expand their sound while sticking close to their core formula of radio-friendly, emotionally charged rock, anchored by Hugo Ferreira’s distinctive, resonant baritone vocals.
The album leans heavily into early 2000s post-grunge and alternative metal, with big guitar riffs, tightly wound rhythms, and soaring, anthemic choruses. Tracks like the title song “After We Go”, along with “The Chain” (a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s classic, reimagined with a darker, heavier edge), and “Hey Now”, capture the band’s efforts to walk the line between mainstream appeal and hard rock credibility. However, the production and songwriting reflect some tension. After We Go was initially delayed and went through label and lineup challenges, with producer Toby Wright (known for his work with Alice in Chains and Korn) stepping in to add a more polished, metallic edge to the record. This occasionally results in a slickness that smooths out some of the rawness fans appreciated on their debut. Still, Ferreira’s vocals remain a highlight—his mix of grit and melody giving emotional gravity to even the album’s more generic moments.
The album is introspective but rarely subtle, often channeling themes of alienation and personal struggle that were typical of the post-grunge era. Songs like “Don’t Letting Go” and “Alright” reveal an underlying vulnerability beneath the heavy guitar textures.
While After We Go didn’t achieve the same level of commercial success as Tantric’s debut, it remains a solid entry in the early 2000s post-grunge canon, especially for fans of bands like Creed, Days of the New (from which Tantric evolved), Seether, or 3 Doors Down. It also represents a transitional moment for the band before lineup changes and shifting musical trends altered their trajectory in the years that followed.
After We Go is a snapshot of a band trying to evolve under pressure, delivering a mix of brooding, hook-laden rock that’s both of its time and occasionally transcends it.
