Shania Twain’s The Woman in Me is her second studio album, released on February 7, 1995 (Mercury/PolyGram), and it’s the release that turned her from a promising new artist into a major crossover star in both country and pop markets. The album was produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange and recorded across 1994–1995 in multiple studios in Nashville (including Sound Stage and Battery Studios) and at Lange’s studio in St. Anne des Lacs, Quebec. It runs 48:08 and contains 12 tracks, with a sound that blends mainstream 1990s country with pop/rock song structure, prominent hooks, and polished, radio-focused production.
The Woman in Me was the breakthrough that set up Twain’s later blockbuster era. It sold extremely quickly for a country release in the mid-1990s (reported as 4 million copies by the end of 1995) and later received a 12× Platinum certification from the RIAA in the U.S. (12 million units shipped). Worldwide totals are commonly cited around 20 million.
One of the album’s defining features is how single-driven it was. Eight singles were released, giving the record unusually long chart life and keeping it in public view for years. The singles include “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?”, “Any Man of Mine”, “(If You’re Not in It for Love) I’m Outta Here!”, “The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You)”, “You Win My Love”, and others—covering both upbeat, groove-forward tracks and power ballads.
In the U.S., the album became a major country-chart force. “Any Man of Mine” was Twain’s first No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart (it reached No. 1 on July 22, 1995, and stayed there two weeks), marking her arrival as a top-tier country hitmaker. The album itself also dominated the country-albums landscape: Billboard’s year history for 1995 notes it reached No. 1 on Top Country Albums and spent an extended run at the top, including 11 weeks at No. 1 in 1995 and returning for additional weeks the following year.
From a catalog perspective, The Woman in Me is often treated as a key turning point for modern country because it formalized a template that later became common: country songwriting and identity presented with pop-scale choruses, tight editing, and crossover-friendly production, without dropping country instrumentation and themes. It also established the core Twain/Lange partnership—Lange’s approach to layered vocals, punchy rhythm programming, and rock-informed dynamics is central to the album’s sound and directly connects to the even bigger commercial leap of Come On Over two years later.
Critically and historically, the album is also recognized for its awards-era impact. It’s credited with major industry recognition in the mid-1990s, including a Grammy Award for Best Country Album (listed among the album’s accolades), and it later appeared prominently in retrospective country-album rankings (for example, CMT’s list of notable country albums).
