Hoobastank – Push Pull – Compact Disc

Push Pull is the sixth studio album by Hoobastank, released in 2018. It arrived more than a decade after their previous album For(N)ever, marking the band’s return after a long recording hiatus. During that time, Hoobastank continued to tour and revisit their earlier material, but Push Pull represents a deliberate effort to explore a new musical direction rather than simply revisiting the post-grunge sound that originally brought them widespread attention in the early 2000s.

The album moves away from the heavy alternative rock and post-grunge style that defined earlier hits like “The Reason” and “Crawling in the Dark.” Instead, Push Pull leans into a smoother blend of pop, funk, R&B, and groove-oriented rock. The production features prominent bass lines, rhythmic guitar parts, and polished keyboard textures that give the songs a more relaxed, contemporary feel. Many of the tracks focus on rhythm and atmosphere rather than aggressive guitar riffs, showing the band experimenting with a broader palette of influences.

Vocalist Doug Robb remains the central voice of the band, delivering performances that emphasize melody and emotional nuance. His singing on this album tends to be more restrained and soulful compared with the powerful rock choruses that characterized earlier Hoobastank releases. The shift in vocal approach matches the album’s smoother instrumentation and helps create a more laid-back sonic atmosphere.

The album explores themes of relationships, personal reflection, and emotional connection. Many of the songs focus on the dynamics between two people, examining attraction, tension, and vulnerability. The title Push Pull reflects this idea of opposing emotional forces within relationships, suggesting the constant balance between closeness and distance.

Push Pull stands out as a stylistic departure. Rather than attempting to recreate the sound that made them popular during the early 2000s alternative rock boom, the band embraced a softer, groove-based style that incorporates elements of pop and R&B. The result is an album that shows a group willing to experiment with their sound while continuing to highlight the melodic songwriting and expressive vocals that have always been central to their music.
