Joni Mitchell – Hejira – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

Hejira is Joni Mitchell’s road album, but its travel is as emotional as it is geographical. Written during a period of movement across North America and released in 1976, the record considers what happens when freedom becomes both a necessity and a form of loneliness. Mitchell’s lyrics move through highways, hotel rooms, winter landscapes, old friendships, and imagined futures with an ease that can make their intricate construction feel conversational. The music matches that unsettled state: her open-tuned guitar provides shifting ground while jazz-oriented players add motion without turning the songs into conventional fusion.

“Coyote” begins in mid-journey, its attraction and distance carried by the springing fretless bass of Jaco Pastorius. His sound is one of the album’s defining colors, not because it accompanies Mitchell in a traditional sense, but because it traces a second line around her guitar and voice. “Amelia” joins air travel, desert imagery, and the memory of Amelia Earhart in a meditation on longing and disappearance. Larry Carlton’s guitar and Victor Feldman’s vibraphone add detail so delicately that the arrangement seems to widen the landscape rather than fill it.

The portraits become more complicated as the album unfolds. “Furry Sings the Blues” visits Memphis musician Furry Lewis and confronts the uncomfortable relationship between admiration, tourism, age, and exploitation. Neil Young’s harmonica passes through the track like weather. “A Strange Boy” is playful and wary, while the title song examines the pull between intimacy and independence with some of Mitchell’s most exact writing. Pastorius’ overdubbed bass parts on “Hejira” create a floating counterpoint, giving the song momentum without tying it to a conventional backbeat.

“Song for Sharon,” the album’s longest piece, turns a trip through New York into a letter about marriage, vocation, childhood expectations, and the choices a woman makes over time. It is followed by the restless “Black Crow,” the late-night jazz atmosphere of “Blue Motel Room,” and “Refuge of the Roads,” where travel becomes a way of understanding rather than escaping the self. Bobbye Hall’s percussion, John Guerin’s drums, Max Bennett’s bass, and the carefully chosen guitar voices keep changing the frame. No single band sound takes over; each song finds the ensemble it needs.

This 180 gram vinyl edition presents Hejira in the original nine-song sequence, a format that suits its long lines and patient pacing. The record is widely valued not simply for its lyrical sophistication but for the way words and instruments share the act of thinking. Mitchell does not resolve the tension between belonging and freedom, and the music does not force a conclusion. Instead, Hejira remains in motion—observant, self-questioning, and open to contradiction. It is a singular meeting of singer-songwriter intimacy and jazz conversation, and one of the clearest examples of an artist inventing a form because existing categories were no longer enough.

Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
