The Best of Nelly Furtado follows the remarkable first decade of an artist who repeatedly changed the scale and language of her pop music. This eighteen-track edition places those shifts side by side, allowing “I’m Like a Bird,” “Força,” “Promiscuous,” and “Manos al aire” to sound like chapters in one curious career rather than unrelated stylistic experiments.
The earliest selections still feel unusually individual. “I’m Like a Bird” carries an acoustic lightness and a restless lyric, while “Turn Off the Light” combines pop immediacy with a more percussive, nocturnal mood. “On the Radio (Remember the Days)” looks at sudden visibility with both excitement and skepticism. “Fotografía,” recorded with Juanes, brings Spanish-language collaboration into the collection early, and “Powerless (Say What You Want)” joins a strong beat to a pointed reflection on image and identity. These songs established Furtado as a writer with a recognizable voice even when her production changed.
The middle of the disc shows her range widening. “Try” is patient and emotionally direct, while “Força,” associated with the 2004 European football championship, turns communal energy into a chant-ready pop song. The Loose era then arrives with three of the decade’s defining singles: “Promiscuous,” “Maneater,” and “Say It Right.” Working with Timbaland and Danja, Furtado found a spare, bass-heavy sound that gave her phrasing more rhythmic freedom. “All Good Things (Come to an End)” provides the counterweight, a reflective song whose melancholy is sharpened by the clean production around it.
Later tracks keep the collection from ending as a simple singles chronology. “In God’s Hands” returns to intimacy, and “Broken Strings,” her duet with James Morrison, places two very different voices inside a polished dramatic ballad. “Girlfriend in the City,” “Night Is Young,” and “Stars” add material that broadens the picture beyond the most familiar albums. “Manos al aire” represents Furtado’s Spanish-language Mi Plan period, while the Radio 1 Live Lounge performance of “Crazy” lets her interpretation of the Gnarls Barkley song close the disc in a looser setting.
This compilation works because it does not pretend that Nelly Furtado’s catalog follows one straight line. Its pleasure comes from hearing the same flexible voice move through folk-pop, R&B, Latin pop, electronic production, and live reinterpretation. The eighteen-song sequence includes the major international hits but also leaves room for collaborations and less predictable selections. For a listener seeking one disc that covers the essential 2000–2010 period, it is a generous overview; for existing fans, the non-album and later additions give the program more character than a bare chart-hits package.
