Freddie Hubbard – Here to Stay – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

Here to Stay was recorded in December 1962, during Freddie Hubbard’s remarkably productive early years at Blue Note. The trumpeter is joined by Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Cedar Walton on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Although the session remained unissued for years, it captures a working language shared by musicians closely associated with Art Blakey, Miles Davis, and the changing edge of hard bop.

“Philly Mignon” opens with a nimble Hubbard line and a title honoring the drummer. Jones responds with detailed cymbal work and sharp accents that continually lift the horns. “Father and Son,” written by Cal Massey, gives Hubbard and Shorter a broader melodic setting. Their contrast is productive: Hubbard’s brilliant attack cuts through the ensemble, while Shorter’s tenor phrases arrive from less predictable angles.

“Body and Soul” places Hubbard alone with a famous ballad melody and reveals the control behind his power. He reshapes the standard through long lines and carefully judged dynamics rather than treating it as a technical display. “Nostrand and Fulton,” named for a Brooklyn intersection, brings the quintet back to urban hard-bop motion with Walton’s piano providing both elegance and rhythmic firmness.

The standard “Full Moon and Empty Arms” is transformed into a jazz vehicle without losing its romantic sweep. “Assunta,” Hubbard’s closing original, has a lyrical quality that balances the album’s harder edges. Workman’s bass is especially important throughout, giving Shorter and Hubbard freedom while maintaining clear harmonic direction beneath Walton and Jones.

This 180-gram Blue Note vinyl edition presents the complete six-track session and is identified by UPC 602465149654. The album sequence reflects the later Blue Note release of the 1962 date, preserving its mix of originals, standards, and the striking unaccompanied focus of “Body and Soul.”
