Description
Simple Minds – Sparkle in the Rain – Vinyl Record
Sparkle in the Rain captures Simple Minds as the band’s art-rock detail expanded into a larger and more physical sound. Producer Steve Lillywhite emphasizes drums, piano, and ringing guitar, giving the 1984 album an impact suited to bigger stages without stripping away the atmospheric qualities that defined the group’s earlier records.
“Up on the Catwalk” opens with urgent piano and a vocal from Jim Kerr that shifts between observation and declaration. “Book of Brilliant Things” follows with one of the album’s most enduring melodic builds, while “Speed Your Love to Me” drives forward on Mel Gaynor’s drumming and bright keyboard figures.
The center of the record is “Waterfront.” Built on a simple bass pulse, the song turns repetition into scale, allowing guitar, drums, and Kerr’s vocal to accumulate tension. “East at Easter” provides a more reflective counterweight, retaining the album’s spacious production while pulling its energy inward.
Side two stretches the band’s range. A muscular interpretation of Lou Reed’s “Street Hassle” sits beside the sharp accents of “White Hot Day,” the unusual rhythmic turns of “‘C’ Moon Cry Like a Baby,” and the dark momentum of “The Kick Inside of Me.” “Shake Off the Ghosts” closes instrumentally, leaving the record suspended rather than neatly resolved.
This single-LP edition preserves the original ten-song sequence. Sparkle in the Rain remains a key transition in the Simple Minds catalog: more direct than New Gold Dream, but still filled with layered arrangements and restless textures beneath its arena-ready surface.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
