Isengard – Spectres over Gorgoroth – Vinyl Record

Spectres over Gorgoroth gathers two early Isengard recordings created by Fenriz of Darkthrone: the 1989 Spectres over Gorgoroth demo and the 1991 Horizons material. Heard together, they reveal a solitary musician developing ideas that connect primitive death metal, black metal atmosphere and dark Nordic folk imagination. Fenriz recorded the earliest material at Valhall Studios, working largely alone and following ideas outside the normal demands of a band. That isolation is audible in the unusual pacing and in the way atmosphere sometimes takes priority over conventional verse-and-chorus construction.

The first side is raw and deliberately subterranean. “Thy Gruesome Death,” “Deathcult” and “Rise from Below” move with demo-era force, while “Dark Lord of Gorgoroth” and the brief “Trollwandering” outro give the sequence a fantasy-haunted character. The limitations of the recording become part of its atmosphere rather than a distraction. The vocals move between low growls, distant cries and rough narration, reinforcing the sense of an invented world. Guitar parts are simple by later technical standards, yet repetition and tone make them effective, especially when a riff seems to emerge from the recording’s haze.

The Horizons side shows clear development. “The Fog” and “Storm of Evil” retain the early harshness, but “Bergtrollets Gravferd” and “Our Lord Will Come” suggest the broader, folk-inflected direction Fenriz would explore in later Isengard work. The contrast makes the collection feel like a compact creative timeline. By 1991, the project had begun to absorb more recognizably Scandinavian melodic and folk elements. The later tracks are not polished, but their broader shapes anticipate the distinctive mixture that would make Isengard more than a footnote beside Darkthrone.

These recordings matter because they document a private branch of the Norwegian underground before its aesthetics became internationally codified. The music is rough, eccentric and exploratory. It carries recognizable elements of Fenriz’s later work while remaining distinct from Darkthrone’s catalog. The compilation therefore works best when approached as a document of development rather than a conventional studio album. Imperfections remain intact, allowing the listener to follow experiments that might have disappeared if the tapes had been rebuilt or modernized.

Peaceville’s 2022 vinyl edition places both sets in chronological order on a single LP, giving collectors a focused presentation of material once circulated in far more obscure form. It is recommended for Darkthrone completists, early black-metal listeners and anyone interested in the formative recordings behind Norway’s extreme-metal history. Peaceville’s release gives the material a stable official home and presents the two periods without unrelated additions. The straightforward LP configuration suits recordings created with limited means and keeps their chronology clear from the first side to the last.
