Saxon – Unleash the Beast – 180 Gram Red Vinyl Record
Unleash the Beast captures Saxon entering a renewed late-1990s period with a heavier, more contemporary production while retaining the direct songwriting of the band’s classic work. It was the first studio album to feature guitarist Doug Scarratt alongside Paul Quinn, giving the twin-guitar lineup a fresh balance. Biff Byford remains the unmistakable center, delivering historical subjects, warnings and rallying choruses with seasoned authority.
The brief “Gothic Dreams” creates an ominous entrance before the title track arrives with a muscular central riff. “Terminal Velocity” pushes the tempo, while “Circle of Light” uses a broader melodic shape. The first side demonstrates that Saxon’s update did not require abandoning traditional heavy metal. The guitars are tuned and mixed for greater weight, but the songs still depend on memorable movement and clearly defined vocal lines.
“The Thin Red Line” draws on military history without romanticizing its cost, and “Ministry of Fools” brings the focus back to power and manipulation. “The Preacher” adds a darker character study. Byford’s diction keeps the narratives intelligible even when the band is at full force, while Nibbs Carter and Nigel Glockler give the album a rhythm section capable of both speed and deliberate, marching weight.
“Bloodletter” and “Cut Out the Disease” are among the record’s hardest attacks. “Absent Friends” changes the emotional register with a memorial tone, making the return to aggression in “All Hell Breaking Loose” more effective. That closing sequence gives the album shape beyond a collection of riffs: confrontation, loss and defiant release follow one another in a compact final run.
This Music On Vinyl and BMG reissue is pressed on 180 gram red vinyl and individually numbered as a limited edition. Catalog number MOVLP3572 identifies the 2025 pressing. It contains the complete eleven-track album in its original order and presents the artwork in a full-size package. The red disc is a fitting visual match for one of Saxon’s strongest and most purposeful later-period albums.
