Neptune Towers – Transmissions from Empire Algol – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

Neptune Towers is Fenriz’s cosmic ambient project, and Transmissions from Empire Algol stands far outside the guitar-driven music for which he is best known. Originally recorded in the 1990s, the album uses long electronic tones, repetition and stark changes in density to imagine deep space as something cold, enormous and unknowable. The name Neptune Towers and the album’s astronomical framing draw directly from a fascination with speculative space music. Rather than illustrating a specific story, the recording suggests signals crossing vast distances, with changes occurring slowly enough to alter the listener’s sense of time.

“First Communion. Mode: Direct” occupies the first side, unfolding less like a conventional composition than a sustained transmission. Synthesizer layers drift, darken and recede with very little rhythmic guidance. The absence of drums or obvious song structure encourages close listening to texture, distance and gradual movement. Analog-style tones overlap in broad bands, sometimes producing harmonic warmth and sometimes a metallic unease. Small fluctuations carry unusual weight because there is no conventional beat to tell the listener what matters or when a passage should resolve.

“To Cold Void Desolation” continues the journey on the second side, and this expanded edition also incorporates four excerpts from the unreleased Space Lab project. Those additions broaden the record without disrupting its severe mood. The pieces feel connected by environment rather than by melody or narrative. The bonus excerpts are especially valuable because the planned third Neptune Towers album was never formally completed. They offer a glimpse of where the project might have gone and turn the reissue into a fuller account of Fenriz’s work under the name.

The album’s reference points include Berlin-school electronics, early ambient music and science-fiction sound design, but its rough, homespun character remains distinctive. Fenriz approaches the synthesizer with the same independence that informs his metal work, favoring atmosphere and obsession over polished virtuosity. This side of his catalog is sometimes described only as a curiosity, yet the album stands on its own for listeners drawn to dark ambient and kosmische electronics. Its austerity is deliberate, and the lack of obvious hooks is part of the immersive design.

This Peaceville edition is pressed on 180 gram black vinyl and expands the original album with the Space Lab material. It is an unusual and rewarding title for Darkthrone collectors, ambient listeners and anyone interested in the less familiar electronic side of the Norwegian underground. The 180 gram pressing supports the extended pieces by giving them a quiet, stable physical presentation. Surface condition and careful playback matter with music this sparse, since long tones and low-level details occupy the space that drums and vocals would fill on a rock record.
