Foo Fighters – But Here We Are – Vinyl Record
But Here We Are is an unusually direct Foo Fighters album, written in the wake of losses that changed the band’s world. Released in 2023 after the deaths of drummer Taylor Hawkins and Dave Grohl’s mother, Virginia, it gives grief a central place in both the lyrics and the performances. The familiar sound of the group is still present: bright guitar lines, forceful drums, and choruses designed to be sung with others. What changes is the pressure those familiar elements are asked to carry.
Grohl plays drums as well as singing, while the band works again with producer Greg Kurstin. His presence behind the kit creates an immediate physical connection between the vocal and rhythmic sides of the record. “Rescued” and “Under You” arrive with the momentum of classic Foo Fighters singles, but their energy does not erase the uncertainty in the writing. The songs use motion as a way through difficult feelings, allowing a memorable hook and a sense of disorientation to exist at the same time.
“Hearing Voices,” the title track, and “The Glass” approach absence from different angles. Some passages are densely layered and urgent; others leave more air around the melody. That variation prevents the album from settling into one expression of sorrow. “Nothing at All” adds another change in dynamics, moving between restraint and a much heavier release. The band’s experience with those contrasts becomes a means of describing emotional changes that are harder to capture in a simple statement.
“Show Me How,” with Violet Grohl contributing vocals, offers one of the record’s gentlest textures. The blend of voices and softened guitar atmosphere creates a pause without breaking the album’s larger thread. “Beyond Me” continues the reflective mood before “The Teacher” stretches the group’s usual song form into a much longer piece. Its shifting sections and extended instrumental passages allow the music to circle its subject rather than resolve it quickly. The scale of the arrangement makes it a focal point in the album’s second half.
“Rest” closes with an intimacy that eventually gives way to a powerful swell of sound. It is an ending that acknowledges the force of grief without pretending to tidy it away. This vinyl LP contains the complete ten-song album. But Here We Are stands apart in the Foo Fighters catalog because its familiar musical vocabulary feels newly exposed: the loudness, melody, and shared effort of playing become part of the subject, as the musicians find a way to continue making music together.
