Big John Patton – Oh Baby! – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

Oh Baby! finds Big John Patton leading a five-piece group built around the Hammond B3 organ, with trumpet and tenor saxophone giving the music a considerably broader front line than a typical organ trio. Recorded in 1965 for Blue Note, the album teams Patton with Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Harold Vick on tenor, Grant Green on guitar, and Ben Dixon on drums. The instrumentation is central to its appeal. Patton can supply the organ's sustained harmonies and rhythmic foundation while the guitar adds a more sharply defined attack, and the two horns give the themes a distinctive ensemble presence. It is a soul-jazz session with substantial room for individual improvisation.

Patton had appeared on Lou Donaldson's The Natural Soul and Good Gracious before establishing his own series of Blue Note leader dates. That background places Oh Baby! within a connected group of musicians who helped define the label's organ-based recordings. Green and Dixon were frequent participants in that world, and their presence gives Patton partners familiar with the demands of the setting. The guitar can contribute a melodic line without filling every space left by the organ; the drums can reinforce the pulse while responding to the phrasing above it. With Mitchell and Vick added to that core, the album gains a different range of colors from Patton's smaller-group recordings.

The first side begins with 'Fat Judy,' moves into the title piece, and closes with 'Each Time.' Those three selections establish the record's blend of blues feeling, organized ensemble playing, and a firm rhythmic foundation. The interest in this type of session comes partly from how an organ-led group can keep a clear groove without reducing the music to repeated accompaniment. Patton's instrument has a broad role, but Green's guitar and the horn players prevent its sustained sound from becoming the only texture. Mitchell and Vick can state the written material together and then bring their own articulation to the improvised passages, giving the band both cohesion and contrast.

On the second side, 'One to Twelve,' 'Night Flight,' and 'Good Juice' complete the six-track program. Harold Vick's 'Night Flight' introduces an up-tempo setting that makes the group's connection to swinging modern jazz especially clear. Patton originals such as 'Oh Baby,' 'One to Twelve,' and 'Good Juice' keep the leader's writing at the center of the record, rather than relying entirely on standards or contemporary pop songs. That combination gives the album a useful balance: the organ setting supplies its recognizable soul-jazz character, while the material allows the quintet to vary its pace and emphasis. The second side continues to use the entire band as an active part of the music.

Listeners who enjoy Grant Green's guitar work in organ ensembles will find an especially substantial supporting cast here, and those exploring Patton's Blue Note catalog will hear one of his fuller small-group lineups. Oh Baby! also provides a good example of how Mitchell and Vick's horn voices can expand an organ session without overwhelming its rhythmic core. The record's identity rests on those relationships, with Patton directing a band whose members each contribute to the sound. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl edition presents the original six selections in stereo on one 180-gram LP. Kevin Gray mastered it all-analog from the original master tapes, and the pressing was manufactured at Optimal.
