Nick Lowe – Party Of One – Cassette

Party of One is an album by English singer-songwriter Nick Lowe. It was released in 1990 and showcases Lowe’s talent for crafting melodic and introspective songs with a touch of wry humor.

Nick Lowe is known for his contributions to the pub rock and new wave movements in the 1970s and 1980s. “Party of One” represents a more stripped-down and acoustic-oriented approach to his music, featuring Lowe’s soulful vocals and his skillful guitar playing.

The album consists of a mix of original compositions and covers of classic songs. Lowe’s songwriting on “Party of One” delves into themes of love, loss, and personal introspection. His lyrics are often poignant and reflective, with a touch of dry wit that has become a signature element of his songwriting style.

Musically, “Party of One” embraces a rootsy and Americana-influenced sound, showcasing Lowe’s talent for blending elements of country, folk, and rock. The arrangements are understated yet rich, allowing the focus to remain on Lowe’s expressive vocals and the emotive quality of the songs.

Dave Edmunds produced this 1990 album, the first time the two had worked together since a rift broke up Rockpile a decade prior. There’s an undeniable punchiness and Edmunds also contributes guitar, but the most recognizable guitar sound is that of Ry Cooder (with whom Lowe played in Little Village, along with drummer Jim Keltner, also present).

“Party of One” received positive reviews for its intimate and heartfelt nature, highlighting Lowe’s songwriting prowess and his ability to connect with listeners on an emotional level. The album includes standout tracks such as “All Men Are Liars,” “What’s Shakin’ on the Hill,” and a cover of Elvis Costello’s “Indoor Fireworks.”

For fans of Nick Lowe’s distinctive songwriting and his ability to create catchy and heartfelt tunes, “Party of One” offers a satisfying listening experience. It represents a mature and introspective chapter in Lowe’s discography, showcasing his talent as both a singer and a songwriter.

Sadly overlooked upon its initial release, the word “party” in the title is apt, as the whole thing plays like a flat-out house party. “Shting-Shtang” and “Honey Gun” are simple fun, while Lowe’s wit is found to be in fine form on “All Men Are Liars,” and his penchant for country-tinged balladry given a turn on “What’s Shakin’ On The Hill”
