Flop – The Fall Of The Mopsqueezer – Cassette

The Fall of the Mopsqueezer is the debut album by the American indie rock band Flop, released in 1992. Formed in Seattle, Washington, Flop emerged from the vibrant alternative rock scene of the early 1990s and brought a unique blend of power pop, punk rock, and indie sensibilities to their music.

Flop formed in 1989 when vocalist and guitarist Rusty Willoughby and drummer Nate Johnson left the group Pure Joy and joined up with guitarist Bill Campbell from Chemistry Set and bassist Paul Schurr from the Seers of Bavaria.

The album showcases Flop’s catchy and melodic songwriting, driven by the distinctive vocals of Rusty Willoughby and the tight musicianship of the band members. ‘The Fall of the Mopsqueezer’ is characterized by its energetic guitar-driven sound, infectious hooks, and clever lyrics that often touch on themes of love, relationships, and everyday life.

The album kicks off with the catchy and upbeat ‘Anne’, setting the tone for the energetic and hook-filled songs that follow. Other standout tracks include ‘Regrets,’ which combines driving guitars with introspective lyrics, and ‘Julie Francavilla,’ a bittersweet love song that showcases the band’s knack for crafting memorable melodies.

Flop’s unique blend of punk-infused power pop, coupled with their witty and introspective songwriting, garnered critical acclaim within the indie rock scene. While ‘The Fall of the Mopsqueezer’ may not have achieved mainstream commercial success, it solidified Flop’s reputation as a talented and influential band in the alternative rock landscape.

After releasing a terrifically melodic, driving punk-pop album, Flop and the Revenge of the Mopsqueezer, on Frontier Records, the group was signed to Epic Records and produced an equally catchy major label debut in Whenever You’re Ready.

Apparently, Epic was not ready for Flop, and dropped the band shortly after their tour supporting the record. Now back with Frontier, Flop’s sound has an extra edge to it, making the band’s brand of dry-witted, intelligent pop that much more intruiging.

With its memorable melodies, energetic performances, and a touch of rawness, ‘The Fall of the Mopsqueezer’ remains a beloved album among fans of indie rock and power pop. It serves as a testament to Flop’s songwriting prowess and their contribution to the alternative music scene of the early 1990s.
