The Prefects, an influential punk band from Birmingham, England, recorded two Peel Sessions in the late 1970s, which were later compiled and released in 1995 under The Peel Sessions on Strange Fruit Records​

Formed in 1976, The Prefects became part of the first wave of UK punk, blending raw energy with a satirical edge. They are noted for supporting major punk acts like The Clash on the White Riot tour and gaining a reputation for their confrontational performances and unconventional songwriting.

The Peel Sessions showcase their minimalist, rebellious approach, featuring songs like ‘Things in General,’ ‘Escort Girls,’ and ‘Going Through the Motions.’ Known for their satirical lyrics and punk ethos, The Prefects used humor and irony to critique societal norms, encapsulating the spirit of early punk. Their music, recorded by legendary BBC DJ John Peel, captures a raw, unrefined energy that made them a staple in punk history, later influencing bands like The Nightingales, which some members of The Prefects went on to form.
