AFI – Bodies – Compact Disc

Target exclusive with alternate cover and patch

AFI’s Bodies is the band’s 11th studio album, released on June 11, 2021 via Rise Records. It arrived four years after AFI (The Blood Album) and reflects a continued evolution away from the aggressive hardcore roots of their early career toward a darker, more electronic-influenced alternative sound.

Produced by AFI themselves alongside longtime collaborator Matt Hyde, the album was largely written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, with members working remotely. That process influenced the album’s tone—introspective, tense, and tightly constructed. Rather than large, arena-ready anthems, Bodies often favors atmosphere and rhythm-driven arrangements.

Sonically, the record leans heavily into post-punk, darkwave, and synth-rock textures. Guitars are present but often layered beneath pulsing bass lines, electronic percussion, and moody synthesizers. The opening track “Twisted Tongues” sets the tone with minimal, hypnotic production and a restrained vocal performance from Davey Havok. Other notable tracks include “Looking Tragic,” “Begging for Trouble,” and “Dulceria” (co-written with Billy Corgan), each highlighting the band’s interest in darker melodic structures rather than straightforward punk energy.

The album centers on isolation, self-examination, and emotional tension—recurring themes in AFI’s later work. Havok’s vocal delivery is controlled and melodic, with fewer of the shouted passages that characterized earlier albums like Sing the Sorrow.

Bodies debuted within the Top 10 of Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart and maintained AFI’s presence within alternative and rock radio, though it marked a continued move toward niche appeal rather than mainstream crossover.

In AFI’s discography, Bodies represents refinement rather than reinvention. It builds on the dark, atmospheric direction explored in their 2010s output, emphasizing mood, electronic elements, and restrained intensity over the high-speed aggression that defined their early years.
