Soft Machine is an English progressive rock and jazz-rock band that was formed in Canterbury, Kent, in 1966. The band’s lineup underwent several changes throughout its existence, but some of the key members included Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper, and Kevin Ayers. The band was part of the Canterbury scene, a musical movement that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Soft Machine began as a psychedelic rock band with influences from jazz and avant-garde music. Their early works, particularly the first two albums, were characterized by a blend of rock and jazz elements.
