The Cranberries – To The Faithful Departed – Deluxe Edition – Triple Compact Discs
Forty-three tracks spread over three discs housed in an eight-panel pocket package sleeve design + booklet featuring album artwork outtakes and sleeve notes written by band historian, Professor Eoin Devereux.
The Cranberries’ To the Faithful Departed (Deluxe Edition) expands the band’s third studio album, originally released on April 30, 1996 via Island Records. The 2020 Deluxe Edition was issued as part of a broader reappraisal of the band’s catalog, offering a remastered version of the original album along with B-sides, alternate mixes, demos, and live recordings from the era.
The 1996 album itself marked a stylistic shift. Following the massive global success of No Need to Argue, the band embraced a heavier, more direct alternative rock sound. Produced by Bruce Fairbairn (known for his work with Aerosmith and Bon Jovi), the record features thicker guitar tones, more aggressive drum production, and a denser overall mix compared to their earlier releases. The sonic change aligned them more closely with mid-’90s mainstream rock.
Key singles from the album include “Salvation,” “Free to Decide,” “When You’re Gone,” and “Hollywood.” “Salvation” in particular stands out for its driving tempo and anti-drug theme, while “When You’re Gone” highlights Dolores O’Riordan’s melodic sensitivity within a more polished rock framework. Lyrically, the album touches on themes of grief, social commentary, fame, and political unrest, reflecting a more outward-looking and sometimes confrontational tone.
The Deluxe Edition provides deeper context for this period in the band’s history. It includes rare B-sides such as “The Picture I View” and “God Be with You,” alternate takes that reveal different production choices, and live performances that showcase the band’s stage presence during their peak touring years. These additions offer insight into the creative process and the broader scope of material recorded around the album.
To the Faithful Departed debuted at No. 2 in the UK and reached the Top 10 in multiple territories, eventually achieving multi-platinum status worldwide. Within The Cranberries’ discography, it represents their most overtly rock-oriented release, and the Deluxe Edition serves as the most comprehensive document of that era—highlighting both the polished studio material and the surrounding creative output.
