The Love Interest – Bedazzled – Compact Disc

The Love Interest’s Bedazzled is a 1993 EP that stands as the only release by the short-lived experimental project, featuring Martin Atkins (of PiL and Ministry) and Chris Connelly (of Revolting Cocks and Ministry). Joined by Mary Lynn Bowling and David Wm. Sims (of Scratch Acid), the group created this EP as an avant-garde tribute to the theme song from the 1967 satirical film Bedazzled, originally composed by Dudley Moore and Peter Cook. Released through Atkins’ Invisible Records, Bedazzled combines dark, ambient textures with industrial and post-punk influences, showcasing the eclectic musical backgrounds of its members.

The Love Interest was a short-lived collaborative musical project between musicians Martin Atkins and Chris Connelly (Mary Lynn Bowling and David Wm. Sims were also featured). The group released only one recording: (1993’s ‘Bedazzled’ EP on Atkins’ Invisible Records label).

Their most recognizable song, the title-track from ‘Bedazzled’, is a cover of the theme from Dudley Moore and Peter Cook’s 1967 film Bedazzled (with words and music written by Moore).

The EP opens with the ‘Blue Velvet Mix,’ a version of ‘Bedazzled’ that pays homage to Moore’s original composition but with a darker, haunting tone. Connelly’s vocal performance is atmospheric, blending spoken word with melodic singing that aligns with the industrial edge the group brings. The track ‘Scratch Interlude’ serves as a brief instrumental break, incorporating textured soundscapes that highlight Atkins’ experience in experimental music.

Other mixes on the EP, such as the ‘Suspiria Mix’ and ‘Halcyon Mix,’ further explore ambient and industrial motifs, using layered synthesizers and reverberating guitar effects to create a cinematic, eerie experience. “The Horned One” is another standout, where the band experiments with dissonant sounds, achieving a track that feels both chaotic and controlled.

Though Bedazzled did not receive mainstream attention, it became a collectible among fans of industrial and experimental music due to its unique collaboration between prominent figures in the alternative scene. The EP reflects the early 90s interest in blending music with film-inspired narratives, and it remains a cult favorite for its fusion of avant-garde sounds with post-punk and ambient influences.
