The Sneetches were an American indie pop band active from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, known for their melodic, guitar-driven pop sound influenced by 1960s British Invasion bands and power pop.
They may have copped the EP’s odd title from the original name of the Rolling Stones’ salacious ‘Star Star,’ but don’t expect San Francisco’s Sneetches to suddenly sound like the bastard sons of the Glimmer Twins. Instead, the seven tracks on this glorious EP are more of what made the Sneetches one of the best-kept secrets of ’90s power pop.
Singer/songwriters Mike Levy and Matt Carges write strummy, minor-key pop tunes and sing them in likeably plain voices while bassist Alec Palao, editor of the excellent fanzine Cream Puff War and a noted historian of ’60s pop, and drummer Daniel Swan provide unobtrusive support. It would all be incredibly twee were it not for the subtle undercurrent of menace in Levy and Carges’ elliptical lyrics and the almost subliminal tension in songs like their cover of the Easybeats’ ‘Watch Me Burn.’
