Victor Malloy – Musing Of Monsieur Malloy – Compact Disc
Victor Malloy, actually an Englishman by the name of Russ Jones delves into the deep, dark corners of future jazz for his debut on Inertia, THE MUSINGS OF MONSIEUR MALLOY.
I’m not sure why he tries on this French persona, but if it comes out with delicious torch songs like, Trying, I wont complain. A lingering melancholy drifts through a majority of the tracks, from the breaks of I Rocked Shut to the more meditative Lone Wolf.
The two parts of Mother Savage ooze with mystery and understated menace, though with some sampled vocals samples in the second part. Pussy has a wicked bass wobble sound that makes it stand out, while Pecan Butter almost veers into a major key. Kubrick 2001 ends the album on a completely cool jazz note. A sweet trip through the dark underworld of jazz.
