Anamanaguchi – [USA] – Double Vinyl Records
Anamanaguchi’s [USA] expands the group’s electronic vocabulary into a record about identity, imagination and the difficult relationship between online worlds and everyday life. Released in 2019, the album retains the melodic intensity that made the band recognizable while using a wider range of voices, textures and arrangements. The four musicians—Peter Berkman, Ary Warnaar, James DeVito and Luke Silas—bring the energy of a live band into contact with programmed sound. The result can be bright and immediate, but it also allows moments of dislocation and uncertainty to interrupt the apparent optimism.
“Lorem Ipsum (Arctic Anthem)” makes that tension particularly clear. Its use of language associated with familiar placeholder text becomes part of a larger question about meaning and the things people take for granted. The band’s earlier association with chiptune remains relevant, yet the palette has expanded beyond a simple celebration of video-game sound. Guitars, electronic rhythms and finely layered melodic figures share the space with voices that can be human, synthesized or altered. The record is interested in those distinctions, using them to make familiar pop emotions feel both direct and slightly estranged.
“Air on Line” provides one of the clearest examples of the album’s ability to make a dense arrangement feel airborne. Other selections, including “The C R T Woods,” “Speak to You [Memory Messengers]” and “Apophenia Light [Name Eaters],” place that intensity inside a more varied sequence. The short passages and changes of scale matter as much as the larger hooks. They allow [USA] to suggest an environment rather than simply a collection of isolated electronic singles. Sounds return with different implications, and the relationship between excitement and unease keeps shifting as the record develops.
The guests add distinct points of contact. Caroline Lufkin appears on “Sunset by Plane,” Hatsune Miku on “B S X,” HANA on “On My Own,” and meesh on “Up to You.” Those contributions extend the album’s interest in the different ways a voice can function inside digital music. They also give the program a succession of recognizable emotional centers without reducing the band to a backing role. Later pieces such as “Tear,” “We Die” and “[ L O M ]” continue the movement between densely constructed sound and more exposed feeling, bringing the record toward its conclusion on its own terms.
This double vinyl edition presents the fourteen-track album released by Polyvinyl. For listeners familiar with Endless Fantasy or the group’s Scott Pilgrim game soundtrack, [USA] offers both continuity and a clear broadening of intent. The vivid melodies remain, but the record asks more difficult questions about the spaces in which those melodies exist. Its appeal lies in that combination of immediate musical pleasure and close attention to the emotional complications of a highly mediated world, with Anamanaguchi using the tools of electronic pop to examine a culture they know from the inside.
