Released on September 16, 2022, View with a Room is American jazz guitarist Julian Lage’s second album for Blue Note Records and his twelfth studio release overall. Building on the trio format he established on his 2021 Blue Note debut Squint, Lage once again anchors himself with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, but for this project he expands the ensemble by inviting fellow six-string icon Bill Frisell to join on half the album’s tracks. The title reflects Lage’s ambition to combine “lush orchestration” with the organic immediacy of a small combo, tracing a line back to his earlier quintet work on 2011’s Gladwell while looking forward to new textural possibilities.
Comprising ten original compositions—nine penned solely by Lage and one co‐credited to Lage and Roeder (“Echo”)—View with a Room traverses a wide stylistic range. Tracks like “Auditorium” and “Word for Word” showcase Lage’s crystalline single-note lines and harmonically adventurous chord voicings, while the interplay between his and Frisell’s contrasting tonalities deepens the album’s sonic palette. Frisell contributes electric guitar on six of the album’s ten pieces (and electric baritone guitar on “Tributary”), weaving his signature ambient textures around Lage’s sharper, more agile improvisations. The result is a record that simultaneously feels expansive and intimate, balancing compositional rigor with spontaneous exploration.
The sessions for View with a Room took place at The Bridge studio in Brooklyn, New York, with Lage assuming a co‐production role alongside engineer and mixer Qmillion. The foursome—Lage on electric guitar, Frisell on electric (and baritone) guitar, Roeder on acoustic bass, and King on drums—recorded live off the floor, capturing the dynamic interplay and subtle room ambiance that define the album’s warm, immediate sound. Lage’s curatorial vision shines through in the sequencing, which moves fluidly from delicate, contemplative pieces to more rhythmically propulsive numbers without ever sacrificing cohesion.
View with a Room was hailed as a milestone in Lage’s rapidly ascending career. Praised the album for its “elusiveness and beauty,” likening Lage’s tonal approach to the “electric volatility” of his heroes Charlie Christian and Jimmy Bryant, and noted how the addition of Frisell opened up new improvisational vistas.
The record’s thoughtful balance of compositional depth and exploratory freedom earned it frequent placement on year‐end best-of lists, and Lage supported the release with a U.S. tour—View with a Room in Concert—that included dates at the Village Vanguard and major jazz festivals. In its blend of lush orchestration and trio agility, View with a Room stands as one of Lage’s most compelling statements to date.
