Mirrorland is the debut studio album by Atlanta-based hip-hop duo EarthGang, released on September 6, 2019, via Dreamville Records, Interscope, and Spillage Village. Comprised of Olu (aka Johnny Venus) and WowGr8 (aka Doctur Dot), EarthGang crafted Mirrorland as an ambitious, genre-bending album that merges Southern hip-hop, funk, soul, psychedelia, and Afrofuturism into a vivid, theatrical listening experience. It’s a bold statement from one of the most creative and dynamic duos in contemporary hip-hop.
The album’s concept is deeply inspired by Atlanta, the duo’s hometown, and by the 1978 film The Wiz—itself a Black retelling of The Wizard of Oz. In Mirrorland, EarthGang turns Atlanta into a magical, surreal landscape where each track acts as a scene or chapter in a hero’s journey, blending reality and fantasy, introspection and celebration. The “mirror” is both literal and symbolic: a reflection of their environment, their identities, and the distorted funhouse of fame, culture, and community.
Mirrorland is incredibly diverse. Tracks like “Top Down” and “Up” deliver high-energy funk and trap blends, while “This Side” and “Blue Moon” lean into soul and atmospheric textures. The duo’s lyrical dexterity is on full display throughout—balancing social commentary, philosophical musings, and sharp humor. Their voices and flows are distinct but complementary: Johnny Venus often sings and delivers animated, elastic cadences, while WowGr8 brings grounded, razor-sharp bars.
One of the album’s most popular tracks, “Bank” (produced by DJ Dahi), is a swaggering, bass-heavy anthem that became a breakout single, drawing comparisons to OutKast’s ATLiens-era sound while sounding completely contemporary. The song’s hypnotic energy and boastful hook made it a standout on both streaming platforms and live sets.
“Proud of U” featuring Young Thug is another highlight—a breezy, melodic track that showcases Atlanta’s creative synergy, while “Swivel,” a darker, more introspective track, had previously appeared on Dreamville’s Revenge of the Dreamers III compilation and deals with trauma, cycles of violence, and the struggle for self-definition. Other guest appearances on Mirrorland include T-Pain, Arin Ray, Malik, and Kehlani (on the deluxe edition).
Mirrorland is full of allusions to Southern Black culture, spirituality, survival, and joy. There’s a theatricality and surrealist bent throughout the record, enhanced by skits, vocal effects, and genre-hopping production. The result is an album that rewards full-album listening, not just single-track sampling—it’s immersive and deliberately cinematic in scope.
Critics praised Mirrorland for its inventiveness, musical diversity, and lyrical ambition. It drew favorable comparisons to OutKast (an inevitable parallel for any avant-garde Atlanta hip-hop duo) but EarthGang avoided mimicry, carving out a space uniquely their own. The album debuted at #40 on the Billboard 200 and helped solidify EarthGang as one of the most promising and original acts on the Dreamville roster.
