A Christmas Cornucopia is Annie Lennox’s first seasonal album, but its atmosphere is far removed from glossy background music. Originally released in 2010 and revisited for its tenth anniversary, the record draws on English, French, and European carols, layered choral arrangements, folk textures, and Lennox’s unmistakable voice. The result is wintry, dramatic, and often quietly strange.
Lennox produced the album with Mike Stevens and built much of its sound through stacked vocals, percussion, keyboards, and carefully chosen acoustic colors. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” arrives with a driving, almost processional energy, while “The First Noel” and “Silent Night” are treated with restraint. Her readings respect the melodies without turning them into museum pieces.
The repertoire reaches beyond the most familiar standards. “Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant,” “See Amid the Winter’s Snow,” and “As Joseph Was a Walking” broaden the album’s traditional frame, and “Lullay Lullay” carries the gravity of an old lament. The original composition “Universal Child” connects the seasonal setting to Lennox’s humanitarian concerns and gives the record a contemporary center.
This anniversary program adds Henry Purcell’s “Dido’s Lament,” a fitting coda for an album already drawn to shadow, history, and choral drama. Lennox does not treat the holidays as uncomplicated celebration; the performances leave room for solitude, memory, and the darker winter emotions that conventional Christmas records often avoid.
The limited vinyl edition uses a special thirteen-track sequence with “Dido’s Lament” closing side two. That vinyl order differs from some compact-disc and streaming presentations, so the contents below follow the physical pressing rather than a generic digital listing.
