Bobby Hutcherson – Stick-Up! – 180 Gram Tone Poet Vinyl Record
Stick-Up! places Bobby Hutcherson’s vibraphone inside a quintet that can move from direct post-bop swing to more open rhythmic territory. Recorded in July 1966, the session features Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums.
Ornette Coleman’s “Una Muy Bonita” is an inspired opener. Its dancing theme gives Hutcherson and Henderson room to play with the melody without losing the pulse. “8/4 Beat” follows with a deliberately uneven rhythmic design, showing how naturally this band handles complex meter.
“Summer Nights” brings out Hutcherson’s gift for lyrical writing. His ringing notes leave space around the melody, and Tyner supports the performance with broad, resonant voicings. Henderson answers with a solo that is muscular but attentive to the tune’s reflective mood.
The second side grows more intense through “Black Circle” and “Verse,” then ends with the grounded groove of “Blues Mind Matter.” Higgins connects the different approaches through buoyant cymbal work, while Lewis provides a clear center beneath Tyner’s powerful left hand.
This Tone Poet pressing presents the complete six-track album on 180-gram vinyl. Kevin Gray mastered it from the original analog tapes, and the deluxe gatefold package gives the 1966 session a presentation equal to its adventurous but approachable music.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
