Chet Baker and Art Pepper – Picture of Heath – 180 Gram Tone Poet Vinyl Record
Picture of Heath brings together Chet Baker and Art Pepper in a tightly arranged sextet recorded for Pacific Jazz in 1956. Tenor saxophonist Phil Urso joins Baker’s trumpet and Pepper’s alto, with pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Curtis Counce, and drummer Larance Marable completing a classic West Coast lineup.
The title piece, originally known as “C.T.A.” and written by Jimmy Heath, uses three horns to create a compact, polished ensemble sound. Baker’s cool, economical phrasing contrasts with Pepper’s sharper alto attack, while Urso fills the middle register with a warmer tenor voice.
“For Miles and Miles” and “For Minors Only” continue the Heath connection through carefully voiced themes and fluent solo space. “C.T.A.” appears as its own performance as well, allowing the musicians to revisit the tune’s rhythmic logic from another angle.
Baker’s “Minor Yours” and Urso’s “Tynan Time” give the session its own compositional identity, while “Resonant Emotions” slows the pace enough to foreground tone and phrasing. Perkins, Counce, and Marable support the horns with a light but firmly swinging pulse.
This Tone Poet edition presents the seven-track album on 180-gram vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog tapes and housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket. It restores the original Picture of Heath identity to music that has circulated under several titles.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
