Schubert: The “Great” C major Symphony as performed by Claudio Abbado with Orchestra Mozart is a live concert recording of Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C major, D. 944, one of the composer’s most beloved and monumental symphonic works. This particular album was released in 2015 on the Deutsche Grammophon label and captures performances drawn from a series of concerts in September 2011 at Italy’s Auditorium Manzoni in Bologna and the Bolzano Konzerthaus with Orchestra Mozart, the ensemble Abbado founded in 2004. Schubert’s Ninth Symphony—nicknamed the “Great” C major to distinguish it from his earlier Sixth Symphony in the same key—was composed in 1825–26 and is striking for its sweeping scale, lyrical richness, and expansive architecture.
Lasting over an hour, the work unfolds across four movements: a grand and expressive Andante–Allegro ma non troppo, a songlike Andante con moto, a buoyant Scherzo with Trio, and an exuberant Finale—all of which showcase Schubert’s melodic gift and symphonic ambition. Abbado’s interpretation with Orchestra Mozart is celebrated for its clarity, warmth of tone, and detailed orchestral interplay, bringing out both the structural sweep and intimate detail of the score.
Because it was recorded live, the performance radiates an immediacy and organic energy that complements Schubert’s effusive musical language. Abbado observes all repeat sections in the score, giving listeners a full‑length, richly paced account of the symphony that many critics and listeners regard as one of his definitive readings of this masterpiece. Released several years after the concerts and several years before Abbado’s death in 2014, this recording stands as a significant testament to his lifelong affinity for Schubert’s music and his ability to elicit eloquent, expressive playing from a chamber‑orchestra ensemble.
